Metagenomics Discovery Challenge MDC CUNY

Would you like to  explore the growing fields of biomedicine and biotechnology at a ununique hybrid independent study course -The Metagenomics Discovery Challenge (MDC) – it’s a certificate-based course. It is intended for both undergraduate and graduate students, although with different levels of complexity. The independent study course is seeking to promote students entering the Biotechnology workforce after graduation. It is offered in a hybrid format and we will be using the Team-Based Learning  (TBL) and Open Educational Resources (OER).  This course has been taught at SDSU and it is supported by the NCBI and NSF. It doesn’t have any prerequisites, but a background in biological sciences or computer science would be helpful. Students will learn how to use the cross assembly programs,  cloud computing to analyze modern large-scale sequence data sets, computational approaches to searching for genes and proteins, present results of sequence analysis as a scientific paper.  At the end of the semester, students will create a 3-5 minute video using the available resources to explain the tools they’ve learned and their discoveries. One team of undergraduate students will win a $5,000 prize that can be applied towards tuition at CUNY.
